Vader contacts the Super Star Destroyer Annihilator, telling the commander that the mission was successful. Following a brief dogfight, they disable the automated corvette's engines. Shortly later, Darth Vader arrives with several TIE fighters. The shuttle pilot realizes that the pirates are after their cargo and blows up their shuttle. The shuttle copilot says the engines are dead. The shuttle's engines are hit and the pirate corvette also fires a torpedo. The comic opens with the Lambda-class shuttle CZ-246 being pursued by an automated pirate CR90 corvette. The Empire'sĭue to his responsibility for the disaster, Gillen and Larroca are dialed into what makes Vader work and this Star Wars series is a lot of fun each month. It is a period of insurgence. There is a lot of Sith-y fun going on here and the relationship between The Emperor and his apprentice is examined well in this issue. The magic is here, and is definitely more good than bad.ĭarth Vader #5 is a rock solid comic. He captures the personality of the droids as well, and the visuals in this comic are quintessentially Star Wars. Body language is key and Larroca does some great work with Vader’s body language. Larroca excels at the guy who matters, and there is a lot of story told through the cold face of Lord Vader. His facial work with some characters has some issues – they don’t look human, which for some of these characters I can only assume is the goal, and that hurts the flow of the story.

Salvador Larroca’s artwork is fabulous at points and kind of awkward at others. Gillen’s skill at channeling his inner Sith Lord is on fully display here and his streak of great Vader issues continues.

Give me Star Wars, give me Darth Vader, give me strong dialogue, solid plot beats and some fun curve balls and you’ll have a happy reader, for sure. There are a couple moments in this issue that I didn’t anticipate at all, and that takes the fun quotient through the roof for me. This is an interesting take on the Dark Lord, and Gillen has done a great job of keeping the twists and turns coming. Kieron Gillen has dialed into the power of the symbol, utilizing minimal dialogue (whenever Vader is concerned) to maximum impact. Gillen and Larroca are building a special series here and issue #5 is another really fun chapter. Lord Vader continues his secret quest with his wildly entertaining secret army in Darth Vader #5.
